The water of the nearby Brahmaputra turns red for three days during the Ambubachi Mela here every year. It is said that this red color of water is due to the menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya. Unlike other Shaktipeeths, red colored wet cloth is given as prasad in Kamakhya Devi temple. It is said that when the mother is menstruating for three days, a white colored cloth is spread inside the temple. After three days, when the doors of the temple are opened, the cloth is soaked with red color from the raj of the mother. This cloth is called Ambuvachi cloth. This is given to the devotees as prasad.
