I reached Calcutta last night. Today the father narrated an incident of 23 March 1931.
That is the incident –
I was 10 years old at the time. It was morning. Zhai Ji (mother) sent me out for some work after giving me two paise. When I went out, I saw that there is a lot of crowds ahead. From Rangmahal Chowk to Shahlemi Darwaj, it is full of people.
All the people had come out of their homes and their faces were flushed. When I stood there, my familiar uncle, who had Manihari’s shop, started saying – son, where are you going next, go back home! I stood there. . Asked – uncle, what has happened, why are people roaming like this?
Uncle said – ‘You don’t know, this morning Bhagat Singh has been hanged by the firangis. Every child there knew Bhagat Singh. People were roaming here and there with anger and were in the hope that if a policeman was seen, then he should end it there, but in that unfathomable sea of the crowd, no policeman was stationed, nor any firangi urgent was visible. People were crying, crying. There was an atmosphere of collective mourning.

I was trying to chuckle. Uncle said – Son, stand on this platform. Standing up there, only the heads of the people were visible. Bhagat Singh was hanged prematurely in the Central Jail of Lahore and the entire police force was withdrawn. If a firangi agent had appeared on the day, he would have been killed, dead bodies would have been laid, no one would have survived. Bhagat Singh Jayanti
i stood on that platform for a long time, then got down and went home. Open the palm and put the money in front of the mother. Didn’t bring yogurt? I said – all the shops are closed. I said – Bhagat Singh was hanged. Bauji hit his head and sat there on Manji. Zhuji asked – what happened to you.’ Bauji started crying – ‘This wretched city is no longer worth living. It took away the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh from us. Why should we stay here now!’ Bhagat Singh Jayanti 2021
Bhagat Singh Jayanti Today, father cried again while narrating this incident. Then remembered Lahore. All my father’s education took place in Calcutta but I was married to a girl from Lahore and I was also born in Lahore. Came to Calcutta with his daughter and wife in 1947, just after that there was no way to go there, but the terrible memories of there are still buried in the chest of the father. Time and again, those memories fade away and we too fall into its grip. Bhagat Singh Jayanti
