National Engineers Day: National Engineers Day 2022: National Engineer’s Day is observed every year on September 15. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of engineer statesman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a diwan of the former Mysore kingdom who is credited with pioneering engineering achievements. The purpose of observing Engineering Day is to recognise all engineers in the nation and to inspire the people to value engineers’ work and their role in the development of the country.

In 1968, the Government of India decided to observe September 15 as National Engineers Day. As per reports, India has the second largest number of engineers in the world. Often at times, India is also referred to as the country of engineers. The day serves as a reminder to all engineers, especially civil engineers, to make Sir Visvesvaraya their role model and work towards accomplishing goals for the betterment of the country.

National Engineers Day: Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861 in Karnataka. He later on attended the University of Madras to study for a Bachelor of Arts. Later in life, he decided to switch career paths and completed a diploma in civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune. The creation of ‘block systems’ is attributed to Sir MV. He patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at a reservoir near Pune to raise the water supply level and storage.

Who Was Sir M Visvesvaraya?

National Engineers Day: Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in a village in Karnataka. After completing his schooling he went to the University of Madras to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He later changed his mind and enrolled in the College of Science in Pune to pursue a diploma in civil engineering.

National Engineers Day: The construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore, the installation of the Deccan Plateau irrigation system, and the flood protection system for Hyderabad are some of Sir M Visvesvaraya’s most well-known accomplishments. The Mysore Soap Factory, Bangalore Agricultural University, State Bank of Mysore, Mysore Iron and Steel Works, Government Engineering College, and several industries were created by Sir M Visvesvaraya. He also received several accolades such as the Bharat Ratna, the Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire.

National Engineers Day: Engineers’ Day is observed on September 15 not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. This day serves as a motivation for many engineers in the country, particularly civil engineers, to follow Sir Visvesvaraya and contribute to the benefit of the country.

Apart from his contributions in the field of engineering, he was also called the “precursor of economic planning in India”, according to the Institution of Engineers India (IEI). His books, “Reconstructing India” and “Planned Economy of India” were published in 1920 and 1934, respectively. He was awarded knight in 1915 while serving as the Diwan of Mysore, and received Bharat Ratna in 1955. National Engineers Day

In 2018, Google launched a Doodle on his birthday to celebrate his genius works whose endeavors led to the Tata Steel engineers inventing an armored vehicle that was used in WWII and could withstand bullets. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya passed away in 1962.
